Dale Byhre, CSMA

Dale Byhre, CSMA, FCA, born in 1956, makes his home in Cloverdale, B.C. As a young man, he was a three year member of the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets Corps 'Fraser' in New Westminster, BC. He attended Douglas College in British Columbia and while enrolled in the graphic design program, he developed a keen interest in fine art and more specifically painting, and with his interest in nautical themes, marine art naturally became the prime subject matter.

While pursuing a career in art, Dale was employed in the forest industry. During these many years, he exhibited on occasion with a number of galleries in Vancouver, often having his paintings included in shows with the likes of John M. Horton and Robert McVittie.  In 2017, Dale retired from his day job and became a full time artist.

Because of his longtime interest in marine art, he has specialized in depicting both historical and modern ships, ranging from rocky shorelines and the working boats of the west coast to the fighting ships of World War II. His work has encompassed his strong appreciation for both ships and the sea, depicting them both with accuracy and reverence. Dale's paintings reflect the long hours of research and study in the maritime field: whether it is a battleship in action during a critical moment in history or fishing docks on a peaceful morning.

He has met with considerable success with both the marine paintings as well as coastal landscapes and plein air studies. In 2021 Dale was made a Senior member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, and is a Signature member of the American Society of Marine Artists since 2017. Dale's work is in many private and public collections, including those of the Royal Canadian Navy, the US Naval Academy Museum, the US Naval History and Heritage Command, the Mosquito Fleet Exhibit, the USS Turner Joy Museum and others.

Dale was elected as a member of the Canadian Society of Marine Artists in 2021.
