Canadian Society of Marine Artists Nautical Artist

Marc Magee, CSMA

Marc Magee is a self-taught artist who started painting in his early teens. His mother was dabbling in oils at the time, so Marc decided to give it a try. He began painting aircraft and trains in various mediums, finally deciding that acrylic was the venue of choice for him.

In the last few years, he took a turn towards paintings representing mostly scenes of corvettes of the Royal Canadian Navy. Marc admits that this penchant for naval scenes has been influenced by his grandfather who was then working for Canada Steamship Lines at the old wharf in Bagotville, Quebec, where 'The Great White Fleet' was operating daily cruises from there to Montreal. When Marc was very young, his granddad used to take him along to show him the ropes for things like changing the light in the lighthouse etc... at four or five years of age, Marc felt very helpful.

Marc joined the Canadian military in the air traffic control field in his late teens and, as a result, visited most of this great country. He spent thirteen years on Vancouver Island and fell in love with the harbour tugs that worked log booms up the Courtenay River to lumber mills, thus reinforcing his choice to paint naval scenes.

Through a chance meeting with Roger Litwiller, an arrangement to make a painting of HMCS Trentonian for Roger's new book came to fruition and, as agreed, following 12th of May 2014 launch of Roger's book, the painting has been donated for display permanently in the Trenton Public Library.

Marc Magee was born on the island of Sardinia, Italy in December 1961. His father was then in the Canadian Air Force and his parents had accepted a posting in Cagliari. Marc is now retired from the Armed Forces, and lives in Trenton with his wife Helene.

Marc was elected a member of the Canadian Society of Marine Artists in July 2012.
