Malcolm Armstrong

Mr Armstrong was born in England in 1932 and went to sea at the age of 16 as a deck apprentice with the Port Line. In 1955 he emigrated to New Zealand and sailed with the Union Steam Ship Company as Mate, then Master. In 1966 he joined the New South Wales Pilot Service working in Sydney and Botany Bay. He was honoured by being made a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Navigation, and Honorary Life Member of the International Maritime Pilots Association and a Fellow of the Nautical Institute of England. He has written and illustrated three books published by Brown Son & Ferguson.

He studied painting for six years under Raymond de Cusak at the Sydney College of Painting in the 1970s and also studied for two years at the Julian Ashton Art School.

Mr Armstrong moved to Canada in 1987. Amongst his numerous commissions, his painting for the International Maritime Organization headquarters in London was also on the cover of the Australian Maritime Museum journal. He has had paintings on the cover of the journal of the Maritime Museum of British Columbia and the Bulletin of the Ontario Historical Society. He was a winner of the 2004 and 2005 Foss Maritime calendar competition and also in '05 winner in the Tacoma Tall Ships Festival Art Show held by the Washington State History Museum. His paintings hang in public and private collections in Canada, the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom.

Mr Armstrong exhibited some of his works at the CSMA Annual Exhibition in 2012.
