guradians of the north
Guardians of the North; 24" x 36" oil on board; enlargement

John M. Horton has been a professional artist since 1961 after training at several art schools in the U.K. His paintings have hung in exhibitions at the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of Marine Artists and the Canadian Society of Marine Artists. Immigrating to Canada in 1966 he began painting British Columbia marine scenes and eventually was instrumental in the launch of the Canadian Society of Marine Artists serving as its first president.

Appointed the first artist to the new "Canadian Forces Artist Programme" in 2002, Mr Horton served aboard Canadian ships in Operation Apollo during the 2nd Gulf War. Works produced from that time now hang in the National War Museum and Department of National Defence Headquarters.

In 2020 Mr Horton was inducted into the Order of British Columbia in recognition of his artistic skills and his ability to record Canada’s rich maritime history.

Over the years, the Royal Canadian Mint has commissioned Mr Horton to design many collectors’ coins. His historical works and modern maritime scenes are much sought after and his works are collected by patrons and institutions worldwide.

John recently completed a number of paintings, that may be viewed and purchased here, for "The Art of OP APOLLO" - a project sponsored by the Department of History and Heritage of National Defense showing some of the activities of the Canadian Navy
