David V. Smith
David originated in Vancouver, B.C., a seaport that has long been associated with the export of millions of board feet of old growth timber, metal ores, fish, Prairie wheat and manufactured products. All that exporting gave rise to a thriving shipping industry which continues to this day. David, as a young boy, became accustomed to seeing ships of all varieties: cargo, towing, fishing, naval and even some sail, traveling through the Gulf of Georgia and through the Straits of Juan de Fuca to the open Pacific.
During summer school break as a teenager, he worked at River's Inlet for the J.H. Todd fish canning company and then held a partnership in a salmon gill-net boat. Later, he served an apprenticeship as a photo-lithographer followed by a long career with the B.C. Ministry of Lands and Forests as an aerial photography aircraft navigator. That gave him the opportunity to travel extensively over the beautiful B.C. land mass.
His work has been exhibited with the Sooke Fine Arts Society, the Federation of Canadian Artists, the Coast Collective and Island Illustrators. Through his art, he shares his memories for all to enjoy.
Mr Smith was invited to exhibit his works at the Canadian Society of Marine Artist's Annual Exhibition in 2012.
