Brian Travers-Smith CSMA, AAA, AWCS, CSPWC, FCA
Born in Tangshan, China in 1931, Mr Brian Travers-Smith became an artist, educator and leader in the art community. He came to Canada in 1946. and lived in Victoria, British Columbia since 1956. He served on the Board of Directors of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, the Emily Carr University of Art and Design (Vancouver) and the Northwest Watercolor Society (Seattle).
Mr Travers-Smith’s primary medium is watercolors and limited edition prints of his paintings. His subjects include marine scenes and landscapes, in a realistic style.
He was educated at the Ontario College of Art, Toronto (1949 – 1950) and the University of Victoria; however, he is a self-taught painter. He was a businessman (estate tax consultant) and part-time painter until 1973 when he turned to painting full-time. He taught painting from 1965 to 1975.
Mr Travers-Smith exhibited with the Allied Artists of America in 1969, 1971, 1972 and 1981, the American Watercolor Society in 1971, 1976, 1977 and 1981), and the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour (1976 and 1977). He was active with the CSMA until 1987.
He was the subject of a solo exhibition at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria in 1962, where he served on the Board of directors from 1963 to 1970 and as President from 1969 to 1970.
His awards and honors include The Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Medal in 1977, and a painting of his is in the Royal Collection of HM Queen Elizabeth II at Windsor Castle.
