CANADIAN SOCIETY OF MARINE ARTISTS
PRESENTED BY
205, Main Street, Picton, Ontario
The Canadian Society of Marine Artists is dedicated to those Canadian artists who have been and always will be inspired by our oceans and lakes, our ships and those who sail in them.
As John M. Horton, the Society’s founding President has said: "Marine art has been traced back some 5,500 years. Still after all these years painters who love and respect the sea are drawn to record its occasions." .
The challenge for today’s marine artists is to embody their own perceptions, tastes and techniques into our deep respect for maritime traditions. Those who succeed deserve our attention.
It is with pride and great pleasure that we present the 25th Annual Exhibition of the Canadian Society of Marine Artists which brings together new works by our established Members and a most promising and varied participation by the guest artists invited by our jury.
It is of course an added pleasure to hold these Silver Anniversary celebrations in our new premises at “The Victory”.
Visitors cannot fail to be impressed with the breadth of subject matter, the depth of understanding and the dedication to distinctive quality that is intrinsic to the Society’s dedication to preserving our artistic heritage and maintaining a legacy of excellence.

Yves Bérubé, CSMA, IFA Surfing the sea oil 16” x 20”
Yves Bérubé, CSMA, IFA, was born in the early sixties in St-Godefroy, Québec. He now lives in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, where he operates the Marine Art Gallery of the Atlantic. A self-taught painter, he works in the mediums of oil, watercolour, acrylic, ink and wash.
As a young boy Yves grew up within hailing distance of the huge freighters that sailed the St. Lawrence; later, he went off to sea to work on those very same ships and during this time he studied, sketched and painted, always refining his skills. His paintings now appear in film documentaries and on book covers and are displayed in numerous museums and international collections. A career painter since 1993, his art commissions come from anywhere on the globe.
His reputation is based on his passion for physical and historical accuracy and can be seen in all his paintings. Through the realism of his paintings, he strives to share and preserve the memory of this heritage. This painstaking attention to detail has not gone unnoticed as the number of collectors of his work is ever increasing.

Mark Boden, CSMA Cariad and Brynhild oil on canvas 18” x 24”
Mark Boden, CSMA was born in Bermuda. After completing his secondary education in England and university in the United States, he returned to Bermuda, where he worked as a charter Captain for eighteen years. Mark has logged over 15,000 offshore miles, and seen the oceans many moods. Mark and his family have lived on a 20 ton Venus gaff ketch in Bermuda and the Caribbean for a number of years but now call Belleville home.
"At first sight he gives the impression of photographic realism, but on closer study his technique resembles that of Winterhalter in his impressionist interpretation of his Victorian subjects. What appears at first to be precision turns out to be a clever impression of verisimilitude. The technique gives surprising life to what could be merely cold realism." Andrew Trimingham in the Mid-Ocean News, 1996
Mark has been a member of the CSMA since 2004. He concentrates predominately on yachting themes and specializes in realistic marine paintings. His work can be found in collections worldwide, and he has exhibited with such well known artists as J. Steven Dews, Tim Thompson, William Muller and Ken Marschall.

lives on the rugged east coast of Canada in the historic port city of Halifax, Nova Scotia. Her work ranges from marine depictions to landscapes to the military-related art that is so much a part of the local heritage.
Her paintings are exhibited in private and corporate collections and numerous galleries throughout Canada and the United States. From structural renderings to free flowing watercolours capturing the drama found in the Nova Scotia’s landscape, each work shows the artist's unique perspective.
In 1989, her most notable naval commission “Lost In Action”, a series of twenty-four Canadian Warships lost during the Second World War enjoyed a very successful exhibition in Halifax. She was chosen as the artist-in-residence for the Maritime Command
Museum in 1991.
Pat has shared her love of painting with hundreds of students and consistently has given support to the arts community in Nova Scotia.
Pat Burstall was invited to be a full Member of the CSMA in 2005.

Ken Deeley, CSMA, Yellow spinnaker run watercolour 13”x20”
Ken Deeley, CSMA, was born Birmingham England, becoming a Canadian in the 1950's.
He attended the Central Technical School of Art in Toronto in the late 1950's, and went on to Ontario Collage of Art in early 1960's. He was then off to make a living in the world of commercial art doing everything from graphic design to illustration.
At this time sailing became a preoccupation and needless to say his subject for painting naturally became water.
Over the years he has had a number of one man shows here in Canada and abroad.
His work has appeared in numerous group shows most recently at the: The Royal Canadian Yacht Club, Toronto Historical Board Maritime Art Show, last years CSMA annual exhibition. His works are in public galleries, corporate and private collections in Europe, United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Most of his work over the last years has been limited to commissions

John M. Horton, CSMA, FCA, has been painting for 50 years and has trained at a variety of art schools in Britain. His work hangs in the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of Marine Artists in London, the Canadian Society of Marine Artists, as well as in private and public collections all over the world. One of his paintings was given to HMCS Vancouver from the City of Vancouver.
While many of his works over the years have depicted the actions of both Royal Navy and Royal Canadian Navy ships, he has also done historical works.
In May 2002 Horton returned from a stint with the Canadian naval task group's Operation Apollo in the Arabian Gulf. His impressions of a modern navy in action are preserved on six canvases donated to the nation. They reflect not only interdiction and boarding of suspect vessels but the dedication of the naval personnel themselves.
Continuing the practice of Canada's war artists is assuredly of enormous satisfaction to the traditional side of John Horton.

Dusan Kadlec, CSMA Cronan Wharf oil 24” x 36”
Dusan Kadlec, CSMA was born in Prague in 1942. He received his masters degree from the prestigious Academy of Fine Arts in Prague in 1967. Shortly afterward, in 1968 he emigrated to Halifax, Nova Scotia where he still works and makes his home.
From his hilltop studio in the picturesque fishing village of Purcell’s Cove, Dusan created a large body of work from the powerful portraits of Grand Bank schooners racing for home port in heavy sea to more ambitious historic historical harbour scenes. These works can be found in numerous public, private and corporate collections around the globe – ensuring his position and a lasting legacy as one of the foremost marine and heritage painters.
His highly detailed original oil paintings are prized by connoisseurs the world over, and reflect his strong sense of history. He meticulously researched to accurately portray a place and time in which he had never been.
His reputation as an accomplished painter continues to rise, making him on of the most respected and sought after marine and historical artists working today.
Tony Lassing, CSMA Pier 1 oil 18” x 24”
J. H. A. Lassing, CSMA, P. Eng, OAA, MRAIC, Ret. was born in Amsterdam in 1928. Tony signed up in the Dutch Navy and served as corporal machinist on board the T-class submarine S813 “Zeehond” (Seal) in 1951-2. He then settled in the Quinte area of Ontario in 1954.
Tony’s work as an engineer brought him in contact with many cargo ships and their ports worldwide. His paintings are inspired by these ships and developed from his sketches made at the time.
He is a self-taught artist and has illustrated magazines and books, including Al Purdy‘s “Quest for Ouzo” in 1969. Over the years he has designed stage sets and still enjoys the disciplines of engineering and architecture. He has shown at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and the Jani Exhibition in Stratford, among others. He is a founding member of Gallery 121 of Belleville, Ontario where a retrospective of his work was shown in the fall of 2004.

Donald B. Macmillan, CSMA was born in St. Catharines, Ont. and was introduced to the ships passing through the Welland Canal early in life. That interest led to an appointment to H.M.C.S. Venture and officer’s training with the RCN
A career in Architecture along with a teaching position at Sheridan College in Oakville helped to develop some ability in the graphic arts; but the involvement, starting in 1992, with the restoration of an ex-Soviet Navy steam tug brought the sea back into his life. In the ensuing years he has steamed the waters and visited major ports from the Baltic to the Black Sea. That led to the writing and illustration of a book on his experiences titled ‘Saltwater Cocktales’. The current emphasis in his work is on Canada’s marine history and his media of preference is graphite (pencil).
His work hangs in collections in the U.S., Japan, Russia, Sweden, Germany, Holland, Italy, Albania, Turkey as well as Canada.
He was honoured by election to the Canadian Society of Marine Artists in 2006.

Stefan Starenkyj oil 30”x 36”
Bateaux de pêche au repos
Stefan Starenkyj At a time when one only thinks of playing ball, Stephan Starenkyj preferred his pencils and paper. His drawing abilities led him to study architecture and after graduating from McGill University, he practiced his profession in the Québec city area, in the French West Indies and in the Eastern Townships.
During all that time he did not set aside his love for painting and drawing and as result, 51 of his pen and ink drawings were published under the title : Bellechase en blanc et noir. This unique collection has been acclaimed and appreciated by the general public.
Through the years his realistic style has developed into an expression of great intensity. A simple barn, worn and twisted by time, a silent landscape, boats at rest . . . , become a message of perseverance and lasting serenity.
