History of the Canadian Society of Marine Artists
February 1984
On the second of February, 1984, a meeting was held at 8:30 a.m. at the Chateau Victoria. Attending the meeting were John Horton, Ray Warren, Brian Travers-Smith, Harry Heine, Robert McVittie, and George Bates. Mr. Horton recommended the summer exhibition be held the same time as the Sea Festival on July 10th, 1984. Mr. Horton also mentioned the exhibition would be at the Vancouver Maritime Museum. Mr. Horton clarified at the exhibition there would be a maximum of four art entries per person and five for CSMA members. Mr. Heine moved that the following artists be elected as new members:
- Len Gibbs
- Brian R. Johnson
- Mark Meyers
- Edward Spears
Mr. Heine also moved that Kiff Holland and Peter Thompson be placed on the applicants list and was seconded by George Bates. Harry Heine also suggested that everyone work on a Society logo and send Society information to the Sea History Magazine. A Society newsletter would be sent out to all lay members, artists, and exhibitors.
On the thirtieth of May, 1984 a meeting was held at Ray Warren's home at 308 West 62nd Ave., in Vancouver B.C. Attending the meeting were Ronald Jackson; John M. Horton; Ray Warren; Marke K. Simmons; Robert McVittie; and George Bates. George Bates read the minutes of the previous meeting. Robert McVittie moved and Ray Warren seconded the minutes be adopted as read. Mr. Bates moved that the upcoming exhibition be kept at the ninth of October to the twenty-second. The exhibition schedule was seconded by Ronald Jackson. The Exhibition was held at the Federation Gallery in Vancouver and the Maritime Museum in Victoria. A total of 87 art exhibits were displayed. It was moved by Marke K. Simmons that a maximum of two art entries per person for submission be acceptable for the exhibition. George Bates seconded.
A discussion then came up regarding hanging and submission fees. Robert McVittie moved the submission fee remain at $5.00 and the hanging fee at $20.00 to cover both the Vancouver and Victoria shows. The fees were seconded by Marke K. Simmons. It was also mentioned Sept. 8, 1984 be the date for submission and Sept. 9, 1984 be jurying day. The two dates were to be confirmed with The Federation of Canadian Artists. It was decided that the fee for exhibition catalogue advertising be left at $50 and $100 respectively. It was moved by Ronald Jackson and seconded by Robert McVittie the restrictions on exhibition painting sizes be determined by hanging committee.
