History of the Canadian Society of Marine Artists
1984 Annual General Meeting
The Society's 1984 AGM was held at the Chateau Granville in Vancouver. In attendance were John Horton; George Bates; Marke K. Simmons; Robert McVittie; Harry Heine; Ronald Jackson; Ray Warren; Brian R. Johnson; Len Gibbs; and Edward Spears.
At the meeting Mr. Horton gave the President's report for the past year. It was moved by George Bates and seconded by Robert McVittie that the President's report be adopted as read. George Bates gave the Treasurer's Report. Len Gibbs moved that the Treasurer's Report be adopted as read. The Treasurers report was seconded by Ronald Jackson. A discussion came up about the election of officers. Ed Spears moved and Ronald Jackson seconded that the present council be kept for the coming year. It was moved by Robert McVittie and seconded by Ray Warren to request Mr. David Northrop to act as auditor for the CSMA.
It was moved by Ronald Jackson and seconded by Marke Simmons that McQuarrie-Hunter be retained as legal council. A vote was taken and the following artists were elected as new CSMA members:
- Valerie Brouwer
- Bo Hermanson
- Kiff Holland
- Peter Thompson
- Alan Wylie
A letter arrived from FCA President Kiff Holland. Mr. Holland expressed concern at the appointment of Luke Rombout as art consultant to Expo '86. It was moved by Robert McVittie and seconded by Ray Warren to write to the FCA supporting this letter.
The CSMA also received a letter from the Maritime Museum about support for their future expansion. It was moved by Ronald Jackson and seconded by George Bates that the Society write back with moral support. It was moved by Len Gibbs the Society have a maximum of five members in the current year. Mr. Gibbs also moved that a maximum of three new members be elected. The move was seconded by Marke K. Simmons.
Mr. Spears moved and Mr. Bates seconded that the Society have a members only show in eastern Canada. It was moved by Robert McVittie and seconded by Ray Warren that a separate show should be held at 'Mystic'. It was moved by Mr. Heine and seconded by Marke K. Simmons that the following be made Honorary Members of the CSMA:
- Maritime Museum of the Atlantic
- National War Museum of Ottawa
- Canadian Naval Corvette Trust
- Maritime Museum of Toronto
It was moved by George Bates and seconded by Marke K. Simmons that Ray Warren be sent an honorary payment for his work on the exhibition catalogue.
