Press Release: Four marine artists invited to full Membership
It is with a great deal of pleasure that the Canadian Society of Marine Artists announces that four artists have been invited by the Members to join the Canadian Society of Marine Artists. They are:
Tony Lassing, Trenton, ON - J. H. A. Lassing, P. Eng, OAA, MRAIC, Ret. was born in Amsterdam. Tony signed up in the Dutch Navy and served as corporal machinist on board the T-class submarine S813 "Zeehond" (Seal) in 1951-2. He then settled in the Quinte area of Ontario in 1954. He has illustrated magazines and books, including Al Purdy's "Quest for Ouzo" in 1969. He has shown at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and the Jani Exhibition in Stratford, among others. He is a founding member of Gallery 121 of Belleville, Ontario where a retrospective of his work was shown in the fall of 2004.
Alan Nakano, Vancouver, BC - Alan Nakano, a West coast artist spent his formative years among boats, working summers on his father's fishing boat. After graduating from the Vancouver School of Art, Alan earned his BA at the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles. In the year 2000, the first time he entered a painting in the Maritime Gallery at Mystic Seaport's, 21st Annual International Maritime Exhibition, he won a coveted Award of Excellence. In the gallery's 24th Annual juried exhibit in 2003, he won two awards, the Museum Purchase Award and the David Thimgan Award. He is one of Maritime Gallery at Mystic Seaport's core group of artists.
Peter Rindlisbacher, Amherstburg, ON - Peter Rindlisbacher was born in Windsor, Ontario. Son of a boat builder and a commercial artist, he developed an intense early passion for everything nautical, becoming a racing sailor, model builder and historical naval re-enactor. His paintings are mainly in oils and generally feature Great Lakes and War of 1812 subjects. His images have appeared on book and magazine covers, and in video and Public Television productions such as The History Channel and National Geographic.
John Vandenengel, Montreal, QC - John Vandenengel was born in the Netherlands. He attended nautical school in Amsterdam then worked as navigation officer for Holland America Line and as marine superintendent for Furness Lines, UK. Retired in 1989, he resides in Montreal, QC. In 2001 Mr. Vandenengel began painting in miniature and since 2002 has been exhibiting at the yearly international shows of the Miniature Art Society of Florida and the Miniature Painters, Sculptors and Gravers Society of Washington DC and was recently invited to membership. He received eight awards from these societies.
Their work may be seen on the Society's website or at the Canadian Society of Marine Artists' premises, 2 Gladstone Ave., Picton, Ontario K0K 2T0, along with works by other members including Yves Bérubé, Mark Boden, Pat Burstall, Ken Deeley, Harry Heine, Bo Hermanson, John M. Horton, Dusan Kadlec, Donald B. Macmillan, O. K. Schenk, and Ray Warren.
