Maritime art will be at the forefront

23rd Annual Exhibition of the CSMA

Picton, 2 April 2006.

Maritime art will be at the forefront on Saturday May 6th, 2006 with two exciting events.

In the afternoon, we are honoured to have noted North American marine artist Peter Rindlisbacher who will give a talk and presentation on the Period Marine Art from the War of 1812 - Great Lakes Theatre. This will take place at 2pm. at 'The Docks', 35 Bridge Street, Picton.

The same evening, May 6th, will see the opening of this year's 23rd Annual Exhibition of the Canadian Society of Marine Artists. The show will feature exciting new art of the members and juried guest artists at the Waring House Conference Centre, Picton. Doors open at 5pm. to enjoy the art. The evening will be complete with a gala buffet, which will be served at 7:30. Master of Ceremonies is Manson Slick, a Partner at Gordon's Auctioneers. He will be proposing some silent - and maybe some not-so-silent - auctions. There will be door prizes.

Three years ago the Archives and Collections Society took over the Canadian Society of Marine Artists, which promotes excellence in art and preserves our maritime heritage through art. The Society is growing and we are proud of our artists.

This is a fundraising event for the Archives and Collections Society of Picton, a non profit Charity dedicated to conservation and preservation, education and research. The Archives and Collections Society was founded some years ago to promote many areas of maritime heritage, starting in local Quinte and Lake Ontario waters and expanding from here down the St Lawrence to include some of our origins across the Atlantic, and that of our neighbours to the South. Aspects of steam, sail, naval, merchant and yachting history are covered, with a main focus from the 18th century to the present day.

The Society's extensive collections of 80,000 documents are comprised of 8,000 books in the reference library, paintings and engravings, other artwork and photographs, a very comprehensive collection of magazines, journals and periodicals, along with manuscripts, log books, charts, video, film and sound tapes.

At only $60.00 per person for the buffet and the Art Exhibition, you will be contributing to the preservation of our heritage by supporting the Archives and Collections Society.
